Prepare to clean

Get ready to clean! Speaking from personal experience, dorm rooms and apartments are not as clean as the universities or landlords claim them to be on move in day. Make sure to bring wipes, sprays, paper towels, a vacuum, and even a swiffer to prepare for the dust that might be left behind by the previous owner.

Packing

It is important to not over pack, but make sure to bring this list of essentials for your college kids!

  • Tool kit
  • Hangers
  • First aid kit
  • Bed raisers
  • Storage boxes to go under bed
  • Extension cords
  • Command hooks
  • Cleaning items
  • An ottoman for extra storage and seating
  • Laundry bag
  • Bluetooth Speaker
  • Trash bags
  • Raincoat and Umbrella

Look for a local Walmart, Target, or Costco

You will forget things and that is okay. One of the most essential tips for moving your kids to college is before ‘move in day’ make sure to look for the local Walmart, Target, or Costco. You can pick up any extra things you might have missed like toiletries, paper towels, or a spare curtain rod at these stores. Try to wait until the end of unpacking to make sure you don’t have to run to the store twice.

Off campus storage

Can’t fit everything into your kid’s dorm room? Many universities offer off campus storage units for students. These can be used to store extra items or to pack full during the summer if students need a place to store their belongings while they are gone.

Document electronics for insurance

Make sure to take photos of and document the ID numbers of electronic devices when your kids move to college. Hopefully it won’t be necessary, but in the case of items getting lost, stolen, or destroyed this is essential for insurance companies.
