Know How Many Moving Boxes You Need For Your Move

How Many Moving Boxes

Every move is different. However, there are some general tips you can use to estimate how many moving boxes you will need. For your living room, dining room and kitchen, expect to use at least 5 small boxes, 4 medium boxes and 2 large boxes. You’ll need 1 small box and 2 medium boxes for each of your bathrooms and bedrooms. Every bedroom will also require at least 2 large boxes. And for your garage, plan on using a minimum of 2 boxes of each size.

Now that you have a better idea of how many boxes you will need, here’s a look at the details of each box size.

The Basics of Small Boxes

1.5 cubic feet is the standard size for a small moving box. This type of box usually measures 16″ x 12.5″ x 12.5″. This type of box is capable of holding up to sixty pounds. But, it’s best to limit each one to fifty pounds. That will ensure you don’t encounter any problems like boxes tearing.

Medium Moving Box Sizes and Why to Use Them

Medium moving boxes range in size from three to six cubic feet. There are a variety of uses for boxes that fall in this size category. Whether you need to move pots and pans, electronics or bigger blankets, medium sized moving boxes provide the space you need. And, they don’t take up an excessive amount of room. And thanks to their quality construction, a medium sized box can safely carry a heavier amount of weight than a smaller box.

Specialized Large Moving Boxes

There are five main types of large moving boxes. The first two are variations of wardrobe boxes. You can opt for either a hanging or lay down wardrobe box. While hanging wardrobe boxes do take up more room than a lay down box, they may be your best option for moving closet items that you can’t pack flat. Mirror and/or picture boxes are the third category of large boxes. What’s nice about this type of box is if you need additional length, there’s a feature that makes it easy to connect two boxes. Dish packs and mattress boxes are the last two types of large boxes. Overpacking is the main thing to avoid with dish packs, while a mattress box is ideal if you’re going to need to store your mattress for awhile.
