Create a moving checklist
Once you have hired movers or rented a truck figure out what needs to be done next. You can use our moving checklist or create your own, but you’ll need some sort of guide to help you through the process leading up to the move.
Typically you’ll need to transfer or cancel utilities in your old home and set them up in your new one. If you are switching healthcare providers have them move your medical records. The same goes for any pets or kids. Find a new vet and school in the area and have their records transferred over.
Purge and declutter
Before packing, go through your belongings and get rid of items you no longer need or use. Figure out which items you want to keep, donate, and throw away. If you haven’t used an item in over a year, our recommendation is to toss or donate it. Reducing the number of items you need to move will make the unpacking process much easier.
Utilize suitcases and bags
Put heavy items like books in suitcases with wheels, and use duffle bags or backpacks for clothes and other soft items. This makes moving these items more convenient and saves box space.
Use large outdoor garbage bags to hold hanging clothes, towels, linens, bedding, and other non-breakable items. They are big and sturdy enough to hold these items without needing to use another box.
Take photos of electronic setups
Before disconnecting your electronics (TV, computer, gaming consoles, etc.) take some photos of how they are set up. It can be difficult to remember where all those wires go so taking a picture of your items still plugged in can help you remember how to set it back up later.
Another tip with your electronics is to gather all your product manuals and label the cords that go with them and place them in a secure bag so they stay together.
Be there to greet your movers and moderate the move
Give the movers a walkthrough of your place. Point out any of the fragile boxes and furniture pieces that you need to have disassembled.
If you went with the DIY route of moving be sure to lift the boxes properly to avoid the risk of injury. Make sure to enlist some help as well for the heavier items or if stairs are involved having extra hands will make the move faster and avoid any accidents.
Final walkthrough
Always go through each room for one last look. Open all cabinets and closets, and check outdoor spaces. What you accidentally leave behind might not be easy to retrieve again if a new owner is moving in right away or if your apartment has another renter lined up.
